Hmmm.  You are indeed correct about the T-32's ability to raise its feet 
above the puddles.  I was failed by both my memory (I should have 
remembered this) and powers of observation (and should have noticed it 
even if I didn't remember it).

So the T-32 has not been electrically tortured.  The Sunpak 422D, 
however, has been.  Even though it too has a spring loaded lever ala 
T-32, it doesn't actually work to raise the feet.  The little ball 
contacts still protrude from the bottom of the foot even when the lever 
is depressed.  Perhaps Sunpak didn't understand what it was supposed to 
do.  And it's not simply that my sample doesn't work.  Since I have two 
of these things I checked the second one also and see that its behavior 
is the same.

In any case, all is well.  Neither of them gets turned into toast.
