For macro, you may want to consider an articulated tripod like the Benbo or 
Unilock, or one with a 
tilting centrepost.  see

Outdoor tripods should have sealed leg bottoms to keep muck out.

If you're into birds or wildlife, carry a stool or get a tripod which can hold 
your camera at eye 
height.

I have and like the manfrotto/bogen tripods. Sturdy, reasonable weight.

I always test a tripod by pressing hard down on it, trying to twist it, and so 
on. Most unscientific.
