Does it not focus to infinity, as seen through the viewfinder, or does 
it focus to infinity, but the barrel doesn't show the correct distance?

If the first, It's hard know what is wrong without more info.

If the second, the helicoid is probably screwed into the wrong channels. 
I haven't worked on a 50/1.4, but it looks like others on the diagram. 
Most lenses have a threaded focus helicoid which has multiple, parallel 
threads. If you start screwing it in at the wrong relative radial 
position, the marks on the barrels don't line up properly. You have to 
back it out, turn it back until the threads fall into a new alignment, 
screw it in and repeat until the correct alignment is found.
