Just to add 2 more cents worth, I've had 2 bellows units set up 24/7 since the
mid 70s and generally leave them open about 2" -- no problems yet. They seem
strained at full or zero extension so I leave them "happily relaxed". Not sure
it's really that important as the material is pretty tough -- you might put a
crush mark on them but holes would be pretty tough. More important IMO is
keeping the caps on -- dust inside may reflect light.
