I had also heard that the Canon cable works with the E system cameras
but hadn't heard the bit about Canon having an extra wire. But
comparing the two hot shoes now I see that Canon has 5 contacts to Oly's
4. So, yes, I agree. It looks like the Canon cable should work on both
brands.
The Canon off-camera shoe cord is 60cm and costs $50

The Oly version looks nearly identical (except for the missing 5th pin)
and is the same price but I had to go to Adorama to find it.
