That was what I was hoping for, going from the 6mp 300D with 1.6x factor
to the FF 5D and still being able to crop to the same factor as the 300D
without losing quality. I wanted to have my existing WA cake and eat my
supertele cake too.

On paper, the 300D sized center part of the 5D sensor is 5.1 mp,
compared to the 6.3mp of the 300D. Because area is a multiplication of
the linear dimensions, the difference in image magnification is about
10-11%. That didn't seem like much of a penalty for all the other benefits.

Then I did a simple test. I set up a tripod with QR and plates on the
300D and 5D bodies. I took shots of the same subject, with the same
prime lens from the same place, in the same light, etc. The only
variable was the body. Upon inspection at the pixel level, I found that
not all pixels are created equal. The fewer pixels of the 5D resolved
more detail and looked sharper than the 300D.

The equation isn't quite the same with the 4/3 sensor, as it is smaller
yet. The 4/3 sensor area on a 5D is 3.6mp. The multiplier/image size is
tricker to figure because of the very different height to width ratio,
but is about 30-35%. How a comparative resolution test would work out, I
don't know. My guess is that the 5D would resolve about the same amount
of detail as the E-1, although with fewer pixels. The E-1 sensor is a
pretty old design and obviously things have been improving.

So my guess is that you would lose a little multiplication factor and/or
some pixel count, but the result in printing would be similar in regard
to sharpness/detail. I could be wrong, of course, but I sure am happy
with the results I got compared to the 300D.

Here are my tests, an outdoor tele shot
