Pattern recognition. It's conceptually pretty simple for video, where
the frame rate is fixed. Every so many milliseconds, a new frame is sent
for processing. It's compared with the prior frame(s), which have
already been location processed, to determine where the major element(s)
are, then cropped appropriately before storage. This means it can even
work as you pan, at least up to a certain rate.
The fact that every frame is going to be used makes it pretty simple.
The fact that small failures are not noticed because of the fact that
each frame is not really viewed individually. I was a projectionist
during college. Look at a series of 35mm film frames during rapid action
closely and you see that some are blurred a bit. Just not noticeable
when viewing the movie.
Also, video has either only one shutter speed, or only a very limited
range of speeds. At 30 frames per second, the longest possible shutter
speed is 1/30 sec. In fact, it will be much less than that for
engineering reasons, if nothing else. So it doesn't have to deal with
any of the complex and difficult issues you raise.
I honestly believe the assumption that the fast that they are using a
phrase that means one kind of process in video in the marketing
materials for still cameras has nothing to do with what they are
actually doing.
Oly has done nothing innovative aside from weather/water profing in
their P&S cameras for ages. I think if they had actual digital IS like
video in a still camera, they would be making a BIG deal about it. Look
more closely at the phrases I extracted from the press releases or go
through the releases themselves.
