That's the whole point : dye deterioration is slow and steady (unless storage 
is specifically tailored to keep various parameters constant), but fault is 
instantaneous. That's too much chilling for me. I prefer the hard drive 
solution, at least S.M.A.R.T. gives insight on the drive condition with the 
right tools.

When it comes to archival, the trouble is that we must forsee how someone else 
is going to deal with our heap of pictures. When we had brownies boxes full 
of gran'pa pictures, basically we just could shelve them if not interested, 
without loosing any legacy for our own children if they wanted to take a look 
later. Digital is probably going to be much more selfish. Once the shooter is 
gone, gone are the pics. They'll be either locked by a password, if not 
biometry in a near future, or will fade because nobody's going to have a 
reader anymore, assuming the medium would still be OK. But maybe our images 
are not that important, anyway.
