Foveon's early cameras (before invention of 3 layer) were 3 sensors and 
dichroic splitter. I asked
one of Foveon's Engineers about it, and he said it was extremely costly to make 
because of
alignment issues and that it gets almost impossible to do, as the pixel count 
gets higher and
higher. The other problem mentioned below: the splitter occupies a lot of space 
in front of sensor
,so lenses idealy need to be specifically designed to get ultimate in 
performance, since otherwise
it affects chromatic aberations etc. and shutter ,slr mirror,wide angle lenses 
etc,etc add new
challenges or limitations.
