I went a similar, but slightly different route for many years. I had one
for distance and the other for reading. I had a separate pair of
c=glasses that corrected both eyes, with contacts, for the computer. And
yet another set of bifocals to go over the contacts for coordinating
both eyes at reading and distance. That way, whenever I did anything
vision intensive, I'd have both eyes working together. It made a real
difference for movies, driving at night, long sessions at the computer,
etc. At the same time, I didn't need to wear glasses for all other things.

It all started to not work as well when I got older and the lenses in my
eyes stopped focusing at all. All the specialty lenses still worked
fine, but I started develping a zone of poor focus between the two eyes
with contacts alone. Like you , I'm very fussy about vision, and this
was starting to bug me. I could have gone your route, setting the
distance ofr the nearer focusing contact out to computer distance, but
it didn't occur to me, and I"m not sure I would have gone there anyway.

I tried out a pair of the then new progressives with two aspherical
surfaces. I also had AR coating for the first time, which makes a huge
difference. By reducing reflections, it makes the glasses disappear
visually much more than before. I've been very happy with them. It means
I wear glasses all the time, but, with photochromic lenses too, I only
have one pair for everything, bright, dark, near, far, computer, etc.

I remember when I said that! Maybe it will work for you to stick with
contacts forever.

That's what I thought too, until the big improvements in progressives. I
still had contacts when I got the progressives to try out, and my
intention was to use contacts for everyday. I put on the glasses, walked
out of the shop and never got around to fussing with the contacts again.

Not trying to sell anything, just provide info and experience in case a
change becomes necessary.
