I've used my E-1 in the winter but it was in the car most of the time so not
really a good test. Short exposures to the cold didn't seem to bother it.

Subject: [OM] DSLRs in cold climates?

Since I'm finally considering getting on the DSLR bandwagon, and I
live in Minnesota where during a good part of the year many of the
interesting photo opportunities occur in very cold conditions, I'm
wondering if anyone has some words of wisdom on the cold temperature
operation of the current crop of DSLRs? I have been able to use my
OMs (-2n, 2S, -4T) quite successfully in some pretty cold conditions,
and my Pentax 6x7 has the "remote battery adapter" that lets me keep
the battery warm inside my parka while using the camera in the cold,
but when I glanced at a couple of DSLR spec sheets, operation seemed
to be limited to above freezing temperatures! I know that the
batteries aren't happy cold, nor are LCD displays, and I suppose
auto-focus motors might not be too happy, either. How about the basic
imagers? I've seen very little (though I haven't done a lot of
looking) that addresses this subject. Does one need some sort of
heated enclosure (like a marine housing!)? Or maybe a soft
leather-like wrap-around with heating elements? Or are these things
really much more robust than the specs would suggest? Inquiring
minds want to know!
