Actually, in The Gimp, there is a cool feature that is similar
to HDR in function:
Filters - Combine - Depth Merge
This function combines two images, one light, one dark. Open up
the lighter image, go to Depth Merge, select the darker image as
your Source 2. Fiddle with the controls to learn what they do.
