Olympus, in their great wisdom, decided that the only way to use the
cable release (RM-CB-1, IIRC) with the E-300 and E-500 is by buying
the big battery holder and plugging the RM-CB-1 into that.... which is
an absurdly expensive way of getting what you want.

If your intended exposure time is within range of that available in
the manual exposure mode, then you have a few more options.

1. Use the IR remote - stand behind the camera, but reach over it and
point the remote directly at the IR sensor on the front. You can do
this without getting your hand in the picture, honest. I used that
trick a few times with my old E-10.

2. Use the self-timer on the 2s setting and press the button.

3. Use the "anti-shake" feature. This is simply a timed aperture and
mirror pre-fire (you can set the time in increments of 1 second), i.e.
you press the shutter release and the aperture stops down, the mirror
flips up, then some time later the shutter is released.

I prefer option 3 myself, particularly since I didn't get an IR remote
with my E-300.
