I've settled into a mode of waiting as well. Now that I'm
shooting film AGAIN, I've bought myself time. In fact, just
last night I scanned several images destined for high-end
artprints. What a pleasure it is to see all those zillion
megapixels that come from my Nikon Coolscan V-ED. Life is easy
when you've got good stuff to work with.

Granted, the system ain't perfect, but running a hybrid system
really isn't all that bad either. I was very much running a
hybrid system before the E-1, and I can again.

Speaking of the Coolscan, I had an intesting thing happen last
night. I was attempting to scan a too-short negative and it got
caught inside the film feeder. Well, I had to pop the thing
open to extract it (with tweezers). The mechanicals inside the
film feeder is incredible. What an awsome piece of machinery.
We're talking high-end engineering. Too bad it choked on my
film, but I now understand why it does such a good job lining up
a strip of negs.

Two images scanned last night were done with more functionality
of ICE-4 than I normally do AND they were scanned in 14-bit
mode. (not my normal workflow) Well, that takes FOREVER! For
really high-end stuff I've been using Vuescan, but I have been
having troubles with the highlights blowing out for some reason.
Instead of fighting it, I just went back to the Nikon scanner
software.

Buying time is a viable alternative to spending money on
technology that will obsolete before you even see the VISA bill.
Sooner or later you do have to jump on the wagon, but not when
the current offerings are still short of your immediate
needs/desires. I'm giving Olympus until PMA to get their 10+MP
offering sorted out. At that point, I'll do an evaluation of
current offerings and take a plunge. Honestly, a 100% change to
Nikon just might be the best option for me. The D200 is cat's
meow and used D2X will be priced right. You can get classic
lenses (their legacy 100mm (+/-5mm) lenses are legendary too.
