So true. If there is just one pixel in an area that is blown
out, it will look like you blew out the entire image! This is
especially evident because the on-screen display uses a reduced,
imbedded JPEG image to calculate the histogram and flashing
highlights. Since that file is something like 1/8 the size of
the original, it is going to inflate the blown-highlight alert
to appear much worse than it really is. Also, this is not
totally accurate because it is based on the display-JPEG, not
the sensor data, so any WB correction (or even sharpening)
applied in-camera may cause what appears to be a blown highlight
that really isn't.

I've gotten to the point with my exposures where I'm using my
handheld incident light meter more. It's amazing how much
better my pictures tend to be. When looking at the histogram or
flashing highlights, it kinda scares you since there might be a
bunch of blown pixels. But when I load the file in my RAW
converters, everthing is just fine. It's OK to clip a few
pixels--after all, white is supposed to be white. ;)

This if funny. I hadn't used RAW DATA EDIT for several months
and then after writing about it a couple days ago I ended up
having to use it twice!

It happens to all of us.
