I used to do that with the 300D, training myself to poke the release in 
anticipation of possible shots. Completely unnecessary with the 5D.

Funny how there are these tiny differences one never is aware of from 
tests that can make a big difference. I can see the engineers deciding 
to do that to save battery life, but without thinking how it impacts the 
user, who can't know without looking whether the camera will start up 
without using the on-off switch after a period of being idle. I prefer 
the Canyon approach, the camera is either on or off, depending on where 
I put a switch, so in an indeterminate state depending on some internal 
whim.
