The A - series is designed for wide angle/normal to medium telephoto lenses
with adaptor rings for (49mm, 52mm and 55mm filter threads). The P series is
for bigger telephotos (and wide angles with big filter theads) and is for
filter threads of 52mm and over. I've only got and used the Cokin Series A
filter system - but I will have to get a P-Series filter system too now
since my newly acquired Hanimex 28mm-80mm /3.5/4.5 has, surprisingly, a 72mm
filter thread. I don't think there's a 72mm adaptor ring for the A-Series.
Even if there is a 72mm adaptor ring, I think I'll still go for a P series
holder and adaptor ring anyway because I've seen many P series filters I'd
like going on eBay and elsewhere.
I think there's maybe a kind of 'psychological thing' of A is for Amateur
and P is for Pro judging by the range of filters on ebay and elsewhere. I
have about 15 Cokin filters for the A-series - but still not found a 'clear'
centre spot soft focus - both my current centre spots are 'coloured' - one
is reddish-pink (which came with a set of filters I bought) and a light
blue-tinged one that came with the OM30 camera I bought of eBay. I've seen
loads of clear 'centre spot' soft focus filters for the P series. I know
there is one foir the A-Series (I used to own one years ago). My advice
would be buy holders and adaptor rings for both. Think I'll take a trip over
to eBay now and see if anyone in UK is selling a P series system. (Most seem
to come from Hong Kong or Malaysia - and I refuse to buy from there as I
know people who have been ripped off buying from sellers based there.
