I dunno. I'm confused in this area. I did some simple, but well
controlled, tests of several macro lenses on the 5D I could easily
determine the sharpest aperture for each and which one was sharpest of
all. That seems to presuppose that the sensor can out resolve all but
possibly one of the lenses.

Yet dpreview, using the 85/1.8 at its optimum aperture, determined with
shots of a test pattern that the 1DsII resolves more detail than the 5D.

Is the 85/1.8 able to resolve considerably more than macros? Is my test
using something other than a test pattern and with some solid background
color somehow flawed? .

I suppose the interaction of sensor system resolving power and lens
resolving power is complex.

Haven't there always been lenses that were out resolved by film? Before
sensor based MTF, that was the basis of all popular lens testing. I
suppose we are close to the point where top end sensors will out resolve
all but very high end, very expensive specialty lenses. Manufacturers
will presumably continue to increase mps, even if beyond any practical
use, until they stop selling. You want to pay me $12,000 for a 68 mp
sensor, even though you haven't a lens that will come close to resolving
1/3 that much detail, who am I to complain if I can make it for $6,000
or less.

There are a couple of signs of sense on the part of makers. Fuji has
held the line at 6.3mp in the "F" line in favor of low noise. Now it
appears Nikon is going to move back to about 6 mp with an entry level
DSLR. That's really all you need for the web and up to at least 11x14
prints.
