Like most things in life, it pays to shop around - check out the prices,
services and reputations of qualified engineers - you might be pleasantly
surprised. For example, Jessops (a national camera store chain in the UK)
wanted £120 to give my (then) Minolta 9000 a complete service - which was
CLA plus fitting of new lights seals - and, more importantly, covered the
cost of any parts needing replacement. Had the camera been worth more than
£120 I would have considered it - but I sold it cheap (at a loss) to my
brother-in-law. I paid £38 for it on eB*y (incl. p & p) - it had a very
murky viewfinder (the fousing screen was/is fine) and the DOF preview lever
didn't function properly - so I wasn't sure what to do with it. My
broither-in-law asked how much would you want for it? Bearing in mind the
favours he'd done me - and what I thought the camera was worth - I said £10.
He bought it there and then and was (still is) happy. The camera works ok
(the metering, hotshoe and AF etc. are all fine). It takes great pictures.
And he doesn't mind the murky viewfinder (which doesn't affect the
pictures). He bought a 28-80mm AF lens and Minolta dedicated Vivitar flash
gun for it, ran a couple of films through it - and is very happy with it.
I cleaned the viewfinder glass on the outside, but didn't fancy dsimantling
the camera. Unfortunately, the glass of the viewfinder needs cleaning n the
'inside' or replacing. But at least the camera works and has made my brother
in law happy. It's not often one gets a working Pro grade SLR (even film)
for £10.
