[OM] CRT vs LCD, and a note for Tom Scales

MIke,
You're correct, AFAIK, in that the T models are a higher
specification than the B models. But I couldn't
tell you exactly in what respect. The contrast ratio on my 215 TW is
1000:1, so blacks and whites
certainly appear black and white. It makes my LaCie CRT look almost
dingy by comparison.

Regarding taking a while to get your profile for printing right, it
could be that you
are having a monitor luminance/print brightness mismatch. Most people
use too high
a monitor luminance with LCDs since they are *so* bright, but this
often exacerbates
this mismatch. Most color management experts recommend a monitor
luminance around 120 Cd/m^2 for LCDs as a
starting point, which is well below the maximum luminance that most
LCDs are capable of these days. Of
course, YMMV. Profiling and testing is always the best policy. I am
presuming that you have some sort of calibrator
that you can use with your monitor to create a monitor profile.

With respect to cleaning the screen, I personally really like Klear
Screen from Meridrew Industries.
This solution was developed specifically for safely cleaning these
types of surfaces, and contain no alcohol
that would strip anti-reflective coatings from the monitor. I usually
spray on a light mist and clean with a
soft microfiber cloth (which Meridrew also sells). This is the same
product that Apple uses to clean screens prior to packaging for
shipping after manufacture. It also makes a great detailer for your
motorcycle gas tank! ;-)

Note re: Tom Scales comment on LCD displays: I agree with you that
Dell makes a really good LCD display.
I have had two at work, and they are very impressive. While I am not
a big fan of Dell computers, they produce an
excellent display. They use the same panels (Philips, I believe) that
Apple does for their Cinema Displays.
