I would agree that it could be batteries. A couple of years ago, just
after buying a really nice second 2N from a local camera shop, I was
using it to shoot a wood chopping contest at the Royal Adelaide Show.

Mirror locked up halfway through. Finished using a 1N, then in a mild
state of panic started checking. "Check" setting was OK, but took the
battery out anyway.

It turned out to be a 3V lithium battery (CR1 ?). Many people
regard them as an improvement, but in a 2N, not so (despite fitting
neatly in the battery compartment).

Bought a stock of 357 silver oxide batteries at a battery specialist,
and haven't had a problem since.
