Right... so after a period of grace, the bugger began to lock up - again - 
randomly, at increasing frequency. I figured that removing the bottom had 
moved some cruft around, but that it went back. So, a bit out of frustration, 
I admit, I re-opened the floor of the mirror box, basically flushed 
everything mechanical inside with naphta, dried it in hot air (not directed 
on the curtains), and put it back together. At the moment, surprisingly, it's 
working. I'll put a roll in tomorrow, and be it. If it fails, I'll shelve it, 
end of the story. Thanks to all for your advices,
