Well well! In truth, I think you were right, and (for from being shocked at
your original 'error') I am stunned that you didn't treat my cheeky riposte
with the disdain it deserved.
Each apostrophe is the responsisbility of a single grocer, thus ~Grocer's
apostrophe" is proper usage.
Clearly, you aren't feeling right - hope you are on the mend from whatever
it was.

That's actually an interesting point.
I think singular is correct.
Trouble is ... I can't really explain why. I think it's the collective that
suggests to me it should be singular.
The world seems fairly split on it, with 503 Google hits for "grocer's
apostrophe" and 252 for "grocers' apostrophe".
