The only thing that's standard about a CF card is the hardware 
interface.  What the software decides to do with that interface is 
another thing.  I don't know of any camera that formats a CF card as 
other than FAT12 or FAT32 so, in that respect at least, the card should 
be fully readable on any computer that can handle those formats**.  But 
I believe all of the cameras place a few special folders on the card 
after they have done the basic format.  That's something that your 
computer can have no knowledge of.  Whether your camera is actually 
dependent on those specific folders  is another question.  It may or may 
not be.  But why try to find out?  Use the CF card in whichever device 
you like as long as you format it in the camera first if you're going to 
use it there for recording pictures.

** Note that certain software protocols may impose limits beyond the 
disk format.  Windows XP PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) does not 
understand or recognize any file type that is not JPEG)
