I wish you would send one of those shops my way. The cheapest in
these parts (SC) starts at about $100 for Clark Kent frames and goes up
from there.
How the hell is it that I can buy an iP*d for $175 but some bent
wire and ground plastic sets me back $300.

Not necessary. There are many places here in the states (at least here
on LI), with signs all over selling eyeglasses for $29 minimum. Get all
the options, coatings, astigmatism, etc. corrections, flex frames, and
you're up to $50-$80. They last me years. No, they're not trendy
overadvertised brands, and no they don't "look" cheap in the slightest..
It seems to more depend on how fast you drive past those places while
the smirky mantra "you get what you pay for" is droned & actually
fervently believed. Simply an untrue myth.
