I do appreciate your reticence, but must point out, the science of 
medicine is also called the practice of medicine.
No, seriously... Look at aspirin. One of the true wonder drugs of the 
world. Science e knows a whole lot more about it than they used to, even 
while universally recommending it for a lot of maladies.
They do NOT know all there is to know about what it does in the body, 
and are learning more all the time.
I have an entire textbook (I don't know what else to call it!) on 
Aspirin. That's it's title!
The point being, I suspect you're taking drugs all the time that fit the 
category of "...a drug whose actions on the body aren't really understood."
