There has been considerable amount of debate even as I remember searching
for memory effect problems afflicting rechargeable batteries. While it is
true that NiCad was notorious when it came to memory effect, I do have
first-hand experiences with NiMH doing the same thing some years back when I
purchased the ThinkPad i-Series, which was IBM's first attempt at budget
offerings. It came with a NiMH battery and it sure enough didn't last. Yes I
did things like mid-way recharging as well as using the ThinkPad while the
battery was charging and so on and so forth. I was led to think at that time
that NiMH had no memory effect but it definitely didn't last. I have also
heard many others experiencing similiar issues with NiMH, which led me to
suspect that it might be possible that while NiMH might be better than
NiCad, it still had similiar issues.
Frustrated at all this, I went on the Net and found quite a number of
conflicting information. I would find some people attesting to what you've
said - NiMH had no memory effect issues but almost equally there were those
that reflected my experiences.
As to NiMH losing charge, I don't have experiences on this issue; so I
cannot comment.
