Real architecture here Bill, by Barnstone & Jackson. Sugarland is OK but common
(I love the training rig though). Austin was unique and published. The sad part
is how a succession of local managers started letting the thing go to hell with
quick, hideous fixes to this and that. To think that extraordinary place is
going to be wrecked. It was everything urban development in the Hill Country
should have been. Civilization amid nature. Texas done right, with vision and
respect, free of talentless pseudo-European kitsch, with minimal impact and
controlled density.

Barnstone's work is connected to the De Menils, who, not unlike people like
Harry Ransom, worked very hard for civilization to take root in Texas. I'm
sickened by what the current breed of empowered yahoos are doing - including
those who started the process of ruining a masterpiece before it was sold.

We could pray for a miracle... or maybe someone at a school of architecture or
among former employees will start an awareness campaign. Quite a few are
shocked. I know people who worked there for years and it was an incredible
experience.
