Phil was kind enough to provide a full size color original of this
portrait.

Here's my own first shot at it. First in the original presentation
context
<http://www.moosemystic.net/Gallery/Others/Pemberton/Charly/charly.htm>.

I like the skin a lot better. Others may like it smoother/lighter. I
like the 'real person" texture without the curse of teenagers and the
slightly more dramatic lighting of the face. It also gets rid of the
'devil eyes' and the halo around the head that must be a processing
artifact, as it's not in the original. And I think the darker background
competes less with the face.

Then here's a sort of step by step visual summary of what I did
<http://www.moosemystic.net/Gallery/Others/Pemberton/Charly/charlyC.htm>.
(Once again, I'm sorry I don't know how to make it work in IE.)

And I've posted the origianal where others folks who wish to may
download it and do their own version of B&W conversion
<http://www.moosemystic.net/Gallery/Others/Pemberton/Charly/charlyjpg.jpg>.
