Keep going north. It's officially part of Michigan, but just south
of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Completely surrounded by Lake Superior.
Isle Royale is essentially downwind from the Boundary Waters, so it
doesn't get too much air polution other than from a taconite
processing facility on the north shore and the factories and mills in
Thunder Bay. Another aspect of Isle Royale is an unusually high
amount of precipitation and fog. It rains there a lot due to the
topology of the region and Lake Superior.

Not all parts of Isle Royale are that way. In fact, in the area
where Joel's pictures were taken is hit-and-miss with this. Several
miles to the SW, there is one barrier island covered with it, whereas
the next is almost bare.

There are a number of different types of forests represented on Isle
Royale. One particular hike, going from Three Mile to Lane Cove
encompasses about five types. As the crow flies, that's less than
three miles. Unfortunately, the trail doesn't quite follow the
crows.
