If you go to a fabric store you can likely find some suitable remnants
at relatively low cost. The problem with typical fabrics is that they
don't come in widths more than about 5 feet... suitable for one person
portraits at 5 feet horizontally or multi-person upper body shots if
hung with the 5 feet on the vertical dimension.
There are lots of background fabrics on eekbay at low prices. If you
want to do full body family shots you need something about 10x15 or
longer since you need to run the background under the feet and well
forward. I would start with a medium gray as the most versatile and
make the next one black. Brown is a good choice for the third. Get
something plain or with a very indistinct pattern.

It will handle a 10 foot wide piece of fabric (more with optional
