Hi,

I have to fit those soft boxes and such into what is becoming a studio. I'm
going to get a pair next month and see how they do. I can always send them
back.

No, but the premise, that this is a replacement for a softbox, is
ludicrous. The light not only needs to be diffused but it must appear
to come from something that has a large angular diameter as seen by the
subject. The smaller the source the more it approximates a point source
of light... like the sun. Point sources cast harsh shadows. Physical
size and proximity to the subject are important to wrap the subject in
soft light. That's why umbrellas and big softboxes are used, umbrellas
for price and/or portability and softboxes for maximum diffusion.

Since they're larger, these lights will perform better than a portable
hot shoe flash but that's about all I can say for them. Buy a couple of
Alien Bees and some umbrellas instead. <http://www.alienbees.com/>
The Bees will also recycle 3 times faster and give you the option of a
directed bounce flash when shooting in large rooms as seen here:
