There was some discussion of this on a forum at dpreview. Again it  
was pointed out that it is not statistically valid to draw any  
conclusion from the experience of that trip, but there was an  
observation by someone who bends over backwards to be fair and who  
has seen a lot of pro shooting that Canon failure from moisture is  
not all that unusual and that Nikon failures seem to be related to  
excessive heat. Of course those things would never happen with a  
mechanical camera. Not!

 From my Leica Fotografie reading days I remember the dire warnings  
and injunctions to have your Leica serviced for shoots in extreme  
conditions. All that clockwork needed the weather appropriate  
lubrication to function correctly. So while these electronic marvels  
clicked away happily in Antarctica the congealed grease in an  
unprepared mechanical camera may have brought it to a halt. As  
Roseanne Rosanna Danna used to say, "It's always something."
