No, we're really being punished for all our tasteless, demeaning
Belgian, Swiss, and sundry 'African' jokes. It is a major moral
shortcoming and we need to atone for our own warped sense of humor.
More seriously, what annoys Winsor is actually more propagandistic in
nature. It's about the manipulation of public perceptions and is more
similar to the horrendous stuff that was said about Germans in France or
Britain during WWI. What was then referred to as "bourrage de cranes" --
'head-stuffing' (with lies, propaganda, and the like). A retired USAF
colonel published a piece in which he accused the White House of using
psyops techniques on the American public to manipulate attitudes toward
the French, the Germans, and the Russians. He's probably pretty close to
the truth. - Phil
