The Normans were French? Yes, they had been there for a brief period of
time... but they are half Breton and the other half that traveled
through
Danmark, came from the Eastern Seaboard of Scotland who had to leave due
to
being on the loosing side of a political argument.

As I recollect, the King of the Franks paid a bunch of Northman to put
down
his enemies, then gave them the lands called Normandy, and from there
the
likes of Edward I decided they wanted what they perceived as their
birthright to the throne of the soggy islands back.

I agree - we pretty much started the whole mess! What people object to
in
Britain and the US has a lot to do with that ancient French imperial
drive.
English became half-French after 1066, the Angevin empire was run by
French
speakers, etc. Later, the US was birthed jointly by the enemy twins of
England and France. Those genes have been passed on.

In my defence, I'll state that the Normans were, as the name suggests,
very
much of Norse heritage. Can we now blame our Scandinavian members? All
that
warlike fierceness has to come from somewhere. Our Frankish tribes were
peace-loving, they took over Roman Gaul with the best intentions, to
learn
more about cheese and wine and all that. (Andrew might interject that
the
Angles took over an area he knows and did not all end up in Britain) ;-)
