When they built it, Ely was an island in the surrounding swampy
fenland. ("Ely" comes from "Eel Island.") They actually quarried the
sandstone somewhere near Norwich, then floated the huge blocks on
broad, flat boats built specially for the purpose.
I guess the barb wire is to keep someone from doing the same thing in
reverse... :-)
BTW: This part of East Anglia is in a real hurt in most global
warming scenarios.
