Yes, manual checking of the updates is recommended. One update that MS
tries to force on people is "Genuine Advantage" or something named
along
those lines. It scans your computer and decides if you have legal
copies of their software. Unfortunately it has been shown to sometimes
label your legitimate purchases as pirated. Then they tell you where to
buy them a second time.

                                               >>>><<<<

I was caught in the "Windows Genuine Advantage" fiasco. I went to download a
recommended update, and was told I needed this "Genuine Advantage" to do so;
and once installed, it kept popping up to tell me my copy of Windows was
pirated!

In fact, I had upgraded my internet computer by installing the old
mainboard/single core processor from my photo editing computer into it (when I
upgraded that machine to a dual core processor); and as a result, the "Windows
Genuine Advantage" decided that this particular copy of Windows (I have two,
one for each computer) was now operating on a computer other than the one it
was originally installed upon.

I tried going through Microsoft to rectify that but that was a useless waste
of time. I finally used "System Restore" to get rid of the "Windows Genuine
Advantage" but, that rendered my copies of Adode Acrobat Pro and McAFee
Antivirus inoperable (there were updates for both programs waiting to load when
the computer restarted next; but when it restarted, it did so in a
configuration from before when the updates were downloaded...). The store that
built and upgrades my computers wanted to see what they could do to rectify the
situation (while they were cleaning out residual McAfee software so that I
could again install some antivirus software) - they only sell legitimate,
licensed software - but by that point in time I had just about had enough of
Microsoft...
