But is there any sweeter sound than a rotary engine beyond redline?
I blew the exhaust on my RX-7 one time and found that it really
wasn't too bad. Of course, there were two sequential catalitic
converters to deaden things down some, but it had a nice growl.
Without the muffler, I gained about 10% more horsepower. However,
when pushing redline my wife said that she could hear me hoofing it
from about three miles away--especially when I was downshifting. More
than once I came down the hill to my place of employment at close to
100mph and hit the binders only a hundred feet away from the
entrance. That rear-wheel steering sure got a workout as I made the
90-degree turn into the driveway.
Rotaries have another really cool attribute when running open
exhausts: Flames! Under heavy throttle you'll get nice blue flames
shooting a several feet out the pipes. The 3rd-Gens are really fun
to watch at night. When my exhaust was sans mufflers/tailpipes, I
scorched the bottom of the car.
I'm excited, this particular race has a bunch of RX-8s in it. I
happened to tempt myself a couple of weeks ago and checked out an
RX-8 again. Waaaaaaaah! That is one very nice car--it fits me
perfectly. Someday...
