A filter does have a function as a protective device.
Several years ago I was visiting a thermal area near Taupo that had a
lot of spray in the area, from the thermal activities. I tried to
protect the camera as best as possible, whilst still taking photos.
After I'd left I noticed some drops of spray still on the camera & lens.
I was able to clean them off the camera body & lens. With the notable
exception of the filter glass. Nothing short of sandpaper would have
worked. So the filter not only made the photos better, but saved the
lens from needing a new front element.
I've also had a sediment left on the crystal of a watch from thermal pools.
