That is what Fujifilm has done with their DSLR and it allows a wider  
dynamic range. It does not seem to work on the smaller sensors. At  
any rate it is the tiny sensor cameras that have the limited dynamic  
range. The DSLRs all have a dynamic range that exceeds that of color  
slide film and some are not far from color negative film.
