The lens inverts and reverses the image such that the bottom of the image is
recorded at the top of the film as it rests in the camera. If you see the
damaged portion on the bottom of the frame then the leak was coming from the
top side of the camera. Also, when the film is in position to be exposed by
the lens and shutter, the sprocket holes of the film are hidden from the lens.
If the sprocket hole area is exposed it didn't come from the lens and shutter.
It came from a leak behind the film which means bad seals on the film door.

As I explained above, the shutter and lens have no part in the leak. The
damage done by the leak could have occurred anwhere along the top edge of the
film door wherever the film is out of the cartridge and not yet tightly wound
on the take-up spool. It would have happened even if this frame was

These are bumpers meant to cushion the mirror as it flies up. They have
nothing to do with the leak. If one is a little loose it's not a problem yet
since it's still serving its purpose as a shock absorber. The mirror bumpers
can be replaced at the same time the light seals are replaced. There are two
types of foam used here. One is self stick foam that already has adhesive
applied and is covered by a protective sheet that you peel off when ready to
use. That's the type that should be used for the mirror bumpers. It can also
be used for light seals but that's not recommended. The adhesive tends to
stick to the sides of the foam channels and makes installation very difficult.
It's best to use a thin bead of liquid rubber cement in the channel and then
use foam strips which do not have adhesive already applied. All the old foam
and adhesive must first be completely removed. I think it was Jeff who offered
you a set of replacement foam strips for an OM-4. John Herman
son (our resident repair guru) also sells pre-cut foam repair kits and you can
find complete cleaning and installation instructions starting on this page:

ps: to John. The flashing arrows at the bottom of the page were not
immediately recognized by me as forward and back arrows. Maybe I'm a little
slow this morning.
