Not sure I completely agree. I put an F version of an Xd card in my  
C-7000.  I think the camera was designed long before there was an F  
card and it made a dramatic improvement in performance. It is very  
doubtful that the C-7000 was designed with an F card in mind.

On the other hand almost all the Coolpix cameras used CF cards up to  
a certain point as did many other digicams and none of them could  
take advantage of the speed increases of CF cards. People who bought  
more expensive cards for those cameras just threw their money away.  
You may be correct in certain instances, but I don't think you can be  
categorical about it.
