As mentioned, you are able to input focal length at will with an old 
manual legacy (or non legacy, or lenscap with pinhole) lenses, in using 
an old manual zoom, when you decide on a focal length, just set the SR 
to that focal length. You can be approximate if you don't want to keep 
changing it, and have an idea of around what focal length you will be using.

As Pentax corrected the issue on the earlier K100D based on customer 
input, why wouldn't Olympus simply do the same? Isn't that the Maitani 
way? It is a software (firmware) based situation to begin with, after all.
