If they asked you to ship it back, then do so, but using "Bill receiver's
account" - you should find their account number on the waybill, first six
characters of the tracking number.  But you might want to repack it first,
so as to make clear that the damage occurred outbound to you.

Thought I'd try a supply of Taiyo Yuden DVDs from www.supermedia.com Wow,
seems like a good outfit, and free shipping.  Take a look at the condition
the package came in, practically no packing material inside. 
Package got delivered while I was out.

If it had been well packed and THEN damaged, I'd have filed a claim with
UPS.

I immediately asked their customer service to issue a "will call" so UPS
could pick the box up and take it back.  First they suggested I ship it
back, I felt that since it's their fault contents are in this condition, why
should I have to spend anything to get it back to them? Now, they're
ignoring my emails.
