I believe this may now being used as indicator of the SWD ring AF motor. If
I recall the new version of the 50-200 has it too.

Going back to the E1 successor info in dpreview shows a blue ring on the
12-60 which I thought indicated a "standard" grade lens. Yet the roadmap
identifies it as a "pro" grade lens.
