At a guess, Moose, without resorting to the G-word, it is related to the
Church. Perhaps a reference to an ecclesiastical peculiar, a piece of land
under the control of a bishop.

For those in London, Ely Place EC1 is one such, with a rather attractive pub
at the end, called The Old Mitre (to undeline the episcopal link).

Anybody know the origin of the name Old Peculiar without doing a quick web
search? A hint; it has nothing to do with any idea that the beer is odd. In
fact, it undoes for me the evil perpetrated by Guiness. OY! ;-)

Another hint; folks like Andrew and I would likely have been in trouble with
the Peculiar in those days.
