Just found a flaw in the ointment. I seems to me to be a non-logical PS 
response. When there are no pixels selected, Edit=>Fill (Shift-F5) acts 
like the whole image is selected. Instead of filling nothing, it fills 
everything. So if you use the below action and the whole thing turns 
red, it just means there are no pure white pixels, generally a good sign 
if the histogram goes right up to the end. But disconcerting, to say the 
least!
