Indeed something is wrong Chuck, but I have not been able to figure out
where. Perhaps a little more info may help?

My setup is based around an IBM T60 ThinkPad (Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz, 4GB 566Mhz
RAM, 100GB 7.2K HDD and the b*tchin' 15" IPS Flexview screen) but was
previously based around an IBM R51. With both machines I get similar results
from both of my card readers. The first reader was a SanDisk Ultra PC card
adapter and the second was the SanDisk Imagemate USB 2.0 SDDR-92 (noted as
USB 2.0 Hi Speed on the bottom). Both readers perform the similarly in
either machines with extended download times. I purchased the Imagemate
after getting sick and tired of the long times when emptying cards and was
disappointed with the results being basically the same. The Imagemate was
selected based on the charts at Rob Galbraith as giving the best balance of
read times for my two card types (SanDisk Ultra II and Extreme III both in
1GB sizes). The Imagemate was/is connected to the Thinkpads via IBM docking
units with USB 2.0 cables with other USB 2.0 devices, none of which suffer
from slow speed transfer. I should be getting very different results from
both readers but I don't seem to, it seems unlikely that both readers are
bad but who knows? I will also note that all of the pieces came from B&H and
thus I believe them to be the genuine article and not counterfeits.

So there you have it. I can't figure out where the problem but the Epson is
solving it without making me sad :) . If you or anyone else can offer a
suggestion as to what may be happening please let me know.

You have a serious performance problem somewhere. 2 minutes is about what
you should expect for a 1GB SanDisk Ultra II connected to a decent USB 2.0
reader... somewhere around 8-9 MB/sec. If something is taking
15 minutes it's not USB 2.0.

My old machine had both USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 connections and once in a while
I'd accidentally plug the reader or, heaven forbid, a backup drive
into the wrong socket. Then a large backup might run the better part of a
whole day and night instead of a few hours. I doubt seriously that the
problem is the reader. It's what it's plugged into on your motherboard. If
you still need the USB connection on that machine perhaps you should invest
in a separate USB 2.0 PCI card.
