My understanding was the vast majority of camcorders are CCD not CMOS? Video
cameras ccd's are
usually a little different from still ccd's being interline etc.

A lot of vendors of p/s cameras including oly and canon have used the small
pixel sony ccd's over
the years. The recall of many vendors cameras based on poor Sony ccd package
sealing, a few years
back, highlighted this. So in theory at least, Sony has lots of experience in
making low noise
small pixel (3um )sensors.

The new Canon p/s still camera with full 1 hr video recording, quite likely
uses an imager with on
chip subsampling built in. This means maybe a pro-level DSLR (with mirror
lockup capability)
could use a similar chip combined with the ev display for making a video/still
combined
pro-camera. This makes a lot of sense for Canon and Sony, which make both kinds
of camera.
