You shouldn't delete images in-camera anyhow. If you were to
accidentally format the card or encounter errors that corrupted the
directory structure a recovery utility would be hard pressed to recover
many of the images due to deletion. At least that's the case with the
Canon implementation of the FAT and FAT32 file systems. I know, I speak
from sad experience. I inserted the wrong card and pressed the format
button and realized my error instantly but still too late. The same
would hold true for any camera using FAT or FAT32 (all of them) except
that some may have slightly smarter storage reuse rules which can
minimize but not eliminate the problem.

Anyhow, I lost about half of the images on the card since I had deleted
a fair number during shooting. The saddest part is that I am intimately
familiar with the innards of the file system and should know better.
But, at the same time, I didn't expect Canon's implementation to be a
throwback to 1981. There have been improvements in between.

On further reflection I just remembered that Oly does not compress raw
files and they're all the same size. Therefore, if you shot only raw
the problem I'm thinking of wouldn't occur. It can only occur if file
size varies between images.
